Celebratory Central Library Report for 2008

Christine McDonald, Director (As presented at the SALS Annual Meeting, May 18, 2009, Queensbury Hotel, Glens Falls, NY)

Crandall Public Library had many things to be thankful for in 2008 which directly impacted our services as Central Library. On December 11, 2008 after more than a decade of planning, over 60 public meetings, and 19 months of construction, the expanded and renovated Crandall Public Library reopened to rave reviews.  This project could not have been accomplished without the guidance and support of the Southern Adirondack Library System, its Board of Trustees, Director, Sara Dallas and staff.  Our deepest gratitude goes to the late, beloved Dick Merrill, President of the SALS Board and President of the Crandall Public Library Board who lead us through the building process with his capable leadership. We extend our appreciation to the trustees of Crandall Public Library and the trustees of SALS who approve the Central Library Plan each year.  Implementation of the Central Library Plan of Service would not be possible without the dedication of Crandall staff, and the 34 member libraries. As customers of Central Library services, member libraries provide assessment of the effectiveness of our services and they influence the continuous improvement of the Central Library program.
Although Central Library services were suspended for about a month from November 2008 to December 2008 while we moved back to the new and renovated library, here are some highlights from the goals and activities the Central Library met in 2008:
• Increased access to adult nonfiction collections by enhancing opening day collections  [30.2% of Crandall customers are Central Library patrons]
• Provided access to over 80,00 adult non-fiction books in the Central Library collection
• Processed 29,480 items for Central Library Interlibrary loan
• Used electronic resources including Web 2.0 technologies including the Central Library blog at http://centrallibrary.sals.edu/
• Participated on the Overdrive eAudiobooks Advisory Committee [Crandall’s Central Library Collection Development staff]
• Provided Crandall reference and medical reference staff to answer questions for member libraries 69 hours a week, seven days a week [July and August open 65 hours, six days a week]

Central Library Advisory Committee

As part of our Central Library Plan of Service we are establishing an advisory committee for non-fiction collection development.  The mission of this group is to create a collection development policy that establishes a process for allocating central library resources (adult print, nonprint and electronic materials).  If you would like to join this  committee (which may also meet virtually) please contact Andrea Herman by Friday, July 27th.
