Interlibrary Loan Assistance
Note: These procedures are for member libraries. If you are viewing this page as a patron please go through your home library for ILL assistance.
Your first step for interlibrary loan is the SALS/MVLS catalog.
If you are unable to locate the item you need in the SALS/MVLS catalog, e-mail info@crandalllibrary.org or call the Reference Desk at 792-6508 ext. 3 or 1-800-469-3356 with the information and Crandall will locate the item and place the request for you.
Here are some options if you want to place your own requests:
Search the Capital District Library Council (CDLC) Regional Union Catalog (CaDiLaC)http://cadilac.cdlc.org/CaDiLaC/index.html to see the holdings of academic, public, school and special libraries in the Capital region. Individual libraries will soon be able to enter requests online through a link on the CDLC’s website http://www.cdlc.org. To find, go under Resource Sharing, click on Interlibrary loan and the ILLIAD Point 2 Point Project. Libraries can set up accounts for the colleges listed.
How to place a CDLC request http://cadilac.cdlc.org/CaDiLaC/index.html
- Enter as guest and select searching/requesting.
- Choose the correct item from hit list.
- Availability page will come up.
- If there is a window with a down arrow, click on that to find all libraries that own the requested item.
- Highlight one library at a time and enter for each.
- Click on “Show Availability.”
- Repeat for each owning library.
- If item is available, copy page.
- Fill out the CDLC Interlibrary loan form and send it to the lending library, with a copy of the library’s availability
If one of the owning libraries is UHLS, check their catalog http://www.uhls.org/uhls/catalog.cfm
Search the New York State Interlibrary Loan Network (NYSILL) via the New York State Library’s Excelsior catalog www.nysl.nysed.gov/xcelsior.htm (also on database page). All SALS libraries have accounts at the NYS Library; contact Andrea Herman at Crandall Public Library 9&92-6508 ex 3) if you do not know your ID and password.
How to place a NYSILL Request www.nysl.nysed.gov/xcelsior.htm
- Select Web based catalog.
- At the welcome page, click on SEARCH NYSILL.
- Enter search.
- View Hit list and select appropriate record.
- Click view and then select the Request button.
- Select appropriate request option.
- Enter information in form, including your User ID
If you are still not able to locate the material, Crandall Public Library provides OCLC searching free to member libraries as part of their central library services. E-mail your request to info@crandalllibrary.org or call the Reference Desk at 792-6508 ext. 3 or 1-800-469-3356. Crandall will search OCLC for you, send the request on your behalf, and email you with the results of the OCLC search.
Every attempt is made to borrow the item without cost but at times, the only locations charge a fee to loan. It helps speed up the request if you ask your patron if they are willing to pay a fee and try to pin them down to how much they are willing to pay. Borrowing libraries are responsible for returning the items to the loaning libraries; please do not return to Crandall.
You can search WorldCat for free at www.worldcat.org to get locations and availability of the item your patron is requesting.
